In 1233, the dynamic city of cloth and fortified was granted by Robert de Béthune its city charter, which included the space 'intra muros'. The stone ring wall around the city was probably provided with towers from the start, rounded outwards and closed to the city flat and covered with half a cone deck. The war equipment was kept in the towers. The walls themselves were about 1.50 meters wide, founded on large arches and provided with battlements. As usual, they consisted of sandstone-clad cores of brick. They were breached by four gates, which are mentioned for the first time in 1295: the Steenpoort, the Scheldt Gate or Veerpoort, the Mechelen and the Brussels Gate. At the place where the fortifications had been broken by the Dender, the river could be closed off with the help of a wooden water desk or a chain. The Porte de Bruxelles is now the entrance to the city park.
