The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1837. In the year 1886 the interior of the monastery was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, in 1891 a spacious library was added. In 1900 the old Capuchin church was demolished and replaced by the current church in Gothic style. In 1914 the abbey was destroyed by war fire, only the library could escape the destroying fire. In 1919 the reconstruction of a new abbey in the Flemish Renaissance style was started, the first two wings of which could already be inaugurated in 1924. In 1939 the abbey church was elevated to the dignity of basilica. The new abbey buildings were built according to the traditional plan of a Benedictine abbey: four large wings with the monastery building and the living rooms (library, refectory,...) around a courtyard.
