The Brusselpoort is the last remaining city gate in Mechelen. Due to the urban expansion, the gate is now in the middle of the city, instead of on the outskirts. It is even located in the middle of the ring road around Mechelen, at the intersection with the Hoogstraat.
The gate was built in the 13th century. Between 1264 and 1268 the city walls were built. In Mechelen there were 12 gates. The Brussels Gate was the highest and was therefore called the Superior Gate. Originally, there was another gate called the Brussels Gate, but due to the demolition of that gate, the Superior Gate was renamed.
In addition to its function as an entrance gate, the building was also used for other purposes. There was a police station, a meeting room and Alfred Ost's art studio. Currently, it is a museum about the history of the city. It contains documents and archaeological finds.
