Genk is one of the most important industrial cities in Flanders. This, in the past mainly due to the presence of three coal mines and nowadays due to its location on the E314 motorway and the Albert Canal.
Genk experienced several waves of immigration due to its mining history, which makes Genk a multicultural city. The multicultural character of Genk can also be seen in religious buildings: Genk has four Turkish mosques, a Moroccan mosque, a Ukrainian Orthodox church, a Ukrainian Catholic church and a Greek Orthodox church.
Some other sights you can visit are:
The mine buildings and mine citÚs, the Molenvijverpark with twelve unique sundials in the Sundial Park and the Heempark. Furthermore, you can visit the still working Slagmolen on the Stiemerbeek.
