The inhabitants of Herentals are nicknamed the "Klokkenververs" (bell painters) and "Peestekers" (after the legend of this doorman who could no longer find the lock of the city gate, while an enemy army was about to besiege it. He had then found no better way than to lock the city gate with a large carrot - "pee" in Campine dialect - until he found the lock). Sainte-Waudru is the patron saint of the city, which was once a booming player in the cloth trade. It is now a supply center of small agglomeration with various industries (food industry, metallurgical, textile and footwear, diamond dealer) with an industrial area of 268 ha along the King Baudouin highway and hosting in particular a large electrotechnical company. Herentals counts among other points of interest the church of Sainte-Waudru with its interesting altarpiece dating from the beginning of the 16th century, the Beguinage erected in 1266, the Cloth Hall and its Belfry of 1590 as well as a Monument of the Peasants' War.
