You can see from this folded limestone that the rocks in the vicinity of Bramberg suffered a lot. That great pressure came with the Alpine mountain formation in the Paleogene and Neogene, also called Alpine orogeny.
The orogeny occurred because the continents of Africa and India moved north along with a number of microcontinents, colliding with Eurasia, causing the Tethys Ocean to close. A whole series of mountain ranges arose: in Europe the Pyrenees, the Alps, the Carpathians and the Dinaric Alps, in Anatolia the Taurus, Caucasus and Pontus and in South Asia the Zagros, Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalayas. These mountains together are called the Alpide mountain belt.
