The city Ghent of
Belgium and the town of Nafpaktos at the Greek Gulf Of Corinth are
linked by the famous story Don
Quichot of Cervantes. Miguel de Cervantes fought as an officer with the Spanish Navy, part of the Holy Coalition against the Ottomans in the Battle of Nafpaktos on october 7, 1571. He fought bravely on board a vessel, and received three gunshot wounds – two in the chest and one which rendered his left arm useless, resulting in amputation. During the month of April and May 2008, artist Jean-Baptiste Ganne created his art piece 'El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha' on top of the Boekentoren of Ghent. A red light will signal the whole story of Don Quichot of Cervantes in Morse code in 40 days. This is part of the Courtisane-festival of the cultural center De Vooruit.
