Description by the author

You will enjoy three different routes within the 7 km long route of the fortress channel. The beginning of the route is artificially created and straightened stretch followed by the stretch of Tosmare lake - the right bank of the fortress channel overgrown by reeds and at the end, shortly before the sea - naturally formed river stretch (Melnupe) with virgin shores.
The route will stay for the fans of military heritage and urban paddling and will be as a different alternative for spending leisure in Liepāja. It is recommended to paddle the fortress channel during the spring and autumn time. During the summer time it is covered by green surface and paddling is not that enjoyable.
The channel is included in the fortification buildings system that was built almost all over the Liepāja at the end of the 19th century. The fortification building of the fortress channel have never been involved in a real war action.
Around Liepāja - You can add a stretch to the traditional Fortress channel paddling route by starting it from the surroundings of the Zirgi island. An expedition type route that is recommended to a huge paddling enthusiasts. You must count on impassable obstructions - dikes in the Liepāja lake. You will have to carry the boats across the Brīvības iela (Brīvības street), Pulvera iela, railway and Grīzupes iela after which a paddling route free of obstructions starts till the sea.
There can be dangerously high waves on Liepāja lake during a strong wind. In its turn, at the end of the route - paddling with unsuitable boats in the sea is dangerous!
